Hot Biker Jewelry Presents... The Best Biker Books Online
There are loads of great bike books on the market now, especially books that deal with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The list on this page is by no mean the definitive collection, just what you'd most likely find on my coffee table. I'm a Harley history buff so those books rank high on my list. I'd be a liar if I said I didn't like to look at the pictures too, so without further ado...let's take a look on at what I really think is the best of the best. The Harley-Davidson Century By: Darwin Holmstrom, Hackett, Dewhurst ISBN: 0760311552
Get ready to rock, roll and rumble through 100 years of Harley-Davidson history. Hit the highway with acknowledged authorities as you travel through a full century of Panheads, Shovelheads, Knuckleheads, Café Racers and Evolutions. Cruise through the history of power and speed with Cycle World columnist Kevin Cameron as he documents the Motor Company's delicate balance between technology and tradition. Go hog wild with Hunter S. Thompson and Brock Yates as they outline the evolution of the outlaw image and the culture spawned by Harley-Davidson. Peter Egan sheds light on the XLCR Café Racer and best-selling authors Girdler, Field and Anderson add their expertise to deliver the most comprehensive history ever published on the Company and its highly sought-after motorcycles. Filled with hundreds of stunning new color photographs. Choppers By: Mike Seate ISBN: 0760313393
The worldwide popularity of choppers, be they powered by Harley-Davidson V-twins or imported multi-cylinder engines, is not to be denied. And lucky for us we've got "Choppers" a fantastic, insightful guide to the stretch bike movement. Unbeknownst to most American bikers, the chopper was kept alive for decades in Europe and of all places, Japan, where dutiful gearheads emulated the long bikes they'd seen in magazines like Easyriders and Supercycle. In time, "Choppers" explains, that these imported choppers have come to nearly supercede home-grown versions for their mechanical ingenuity and just plain cool styling. Author Mike Seate, a favorite of mine from his articles in Motorcyclist and IronWorks magazines, lays out the goods on the chopper movement, tracing its origins back to the immediate post WWII period of the bobbers and hack-jobs and follows it on a fascinating, well-illustrated journey through the psychedelic 1960s and beyond. There's even some boffo shots from behind the scenes at Jesse James' Discovery Channel special "Motorcycle Mania" to round out the complete chopper experience. Cool and full of enough eye-candy to keep anybody in the garage for weeks.
Angels of Death By: Julian Sher, William Marsden ISBN: 0786717440
A woman named Cynthia Garcia is stabbed to death and dumped in the Arizona desert after partying at a Hells Angels clubhouse in Arizona; three bullet-ridden bodies of bikers turn up in a river in Holland; a retired policeman is killed when his car is bombed in Australia. Meanwhile, the world’s most famous Hells Angel, Sonny Barger, is feted by the media on his global book tour. Angels of Death takes readers to Arizona, inside the biggest American police undercover operation to infiltrate the bikers; to British Columbia, Canada, where wealthy bikers dominate the organized crime pyramid; to Australia where the “bikies” shoot-it-out with police; to Curaçao where terrorist organizations funnel drugs to Dutch bikers; and to the streets of Oslo, Copenhagen, and Helsinki where a murderous biker war saw rocket attacks and bombs turn Scandinavia into a war zone.
While the media has continued to toast the Hells Angel icon Sonny Barger as an American legend, the facts tell another story — they are America’s major crime export. With an estimated 2,500 full-patch members in 25 countries, the Hells Angels have inspired a global subculture of biker gangs that are among the most feared and violent underworld players.
Out in Bad Standings By: Edward Winterhauler ISBN: 0977174700
In this expose of his life as a member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club, Edward "Connecticut Ed" Winterhalder allows the reader a rare look into how major decisions were made by Bandido leaders all over the world, how the Bandidos expanded into the worldwide dynasty they are today, and how the Bandodo machine operates on a day-to-day basis.
While a member of the largest 1%er motorcycle club in the world, Connecticut Ed was privy to much information about the inside workings of the club and what the future held for it. Regularly assigned projects by the club's international leader, he was responsible for defusing the war between the Hells Angels and Rock Machine in Canada, establishing new Bandido and support club chapters world-wide, organizing the club into a well-oiled machine, and mediation internal power struggles between club members. The Big Book of Biker Flicks By: John Wooley, Michael H. Price ISBN: 1930709455
Award-wining writers who are especially known for their insightful movie commentaries, John Wooley and Michael H. Price present The Big Book Of Biker Flicks, an erudite scrutiny of 40 of the best motorcycle movies of all time. Black-and-white and a handful of color photographs illustrate the discussions of biker movies such as "Angels Die Hard!", "Werewolves on Wheels", "Rebel Rousers". The reflections not only discuss plot and themes, but also the conditions behind the movies' creation, the models of bikes portrayed, the level and useage of violence in such films, and more. A fascinating tour of how Hollywood has glamorized and demonized motorcycles and the people who ride them, The Big Book of Biker Flicks is a welcome addition to personal and academic Cinematic History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
-Midwest Book Review-
Bikers : Culture, Politics & Power By: Suzanne McDonald-Walker ISBN: 1859733514
From The Wild Ones to Easy Rider, the motorcycle has inflamed the imaginations of the media and the general public as well. Marlon Brando, sporting leather jacket, jeans, and moody glare, became a cultural icon summing up "the road" in all its maverick glory But does the myth of the renegade cyclist, an outcast from mainstream society who takes to the road in pursuit of freedom, correlate with reality in any meaningful way? Who really rides motorcycles and why? What are the chief concerns of motorcyclists and how are these represented and contested in the political sphere?
This book, based on extensive fieldwork amongst bikers and the bikers' rights movement, overturns the ingrained prejudice that equates bikers with deviancy and explodes the myths emphasizing the rebellious and dysfunctional aspects of biking. Instead, the author focuses on what biking means to those involved -- the rewards, the risks, the addictiveness, but also the stigma and threats. In response to the negative imagery surrounding bikers, bikers' rights associations evolved between the 1960s and 1980s in the UK and Europe. The author discusses the aims and achievements of these lobbies, and the future of motorcycling more generally as it becomes fashionable as a middle-aged, middle-class pursuit.
The Rebels A Brotherhood of Oultaw Bikers By: Daniel R. Wolf ISBN: 0802073638
Daniel R. Wolf takes you into the outlaw biker world in a way that few books have dared. To bridge the gap between the biker image and reality, Wolf himself became an insider, riding for three years with the Rebels, an outlaw biker gang. Through his immersion in the bikers’ subculture, Wolf gained an intimate understanding of their values and lifestyle.
Wolf’s book brings a scholarly perspective to the biker world. He goes beyond simply describing the bikers’exploits and offers an engaging analysis of the political, psychological, and social dynamics of this little-studied segment of the population. The result is a book brimming with insights into the motorcycle community’s notorious one percent.
